In 2020, the DC Peace Team submitted a statement to the DC City Council regarding the Mayor’s FY 2021 Budget Request for Public Safety Agencies. We supported funding for key existing programs to prevent violence, as well as scaling up or developing similar programs to promote a just, sustainable peace.
In 2013, the DC Peace Team supported the Restorative Justice Platform for DC government candidates developed by the DC Alliance for Restorative Practices. The DCPT promotes restorative practices as an evidence-based tool for schools and the juvenile justice system to effectively address the “school-to-prison” pipeline. We care about reducing juvenile delinquency and violence, cultivating positive youth development and community building.
In 2012-2015, the DC Peace Team supported the efforts to pass the Youth Promise Act. The Youth PROMISE Act (HR 2721) is bipartisan legislation that would give our communities the support and funding they need to effectively address youth violence issues by setting up local infrastructure to support effective on-the-ground work. The Act makes an unprecedented investment in evidence-based, locally run prevention & intervention practices that engage and divert at-risk youth proactively, before they slip into a costly cycle of delinquency, crime, violence and incarceration. By specifically focusing on violence prevention and intervention strategies, this bill ensures we are funding programs that save lives and give every young person the opportunity to meet his or her potential.
